Ged will be taking part in the 24-mile ‘The Mighty Stride’ in the capital on Sunday, September 15 in aid of The Haven.

The Kiltwalk is a unique charity that enables walkers to raise money for any Scottish charity of their choice by staging events in Glasgow, Aberdeen, Dundee and Edinburgh throughout the year.

Participants’ chosen charities also receive an extra boost, as Sir Tom Hunter and The Hunter Foundation pledges to donate 40 per cent to each charity on top of the amount they raise

The Haven offers support to people affected by a range of life-limiting illnesses, as well as to their family members and carers, on a self-referral basis from centres in Blantyre, Wishaw and Forth.

Founded in 2002, The Haven has grown to a team of five nurses, 22 staff members and more than 60 volunteers over the three bases.

It offers a programme of support designed to help individuals cope with the physical, emotional and physical aspects of their illness.

Ged Killen MP said:

The Haven is a remarkable charity that really makes a massive difference to the lives of those who use its services.

I visited the Blantyre centre recently and was blown away with the dedication and passion of its staff and volunteers.

I met with fundraising officer, Scott Cunningham MBE, who explained that Team Haven managed to get into the Kiltwalk’s top 20 charities with their fundraising last year, which is amazing when you consider volunteers represented over 1000 charities.

This year, Team Haven is determined to push into that top 10 with their fundraising, and I hope I can help them achieve that.

Thank you to everyone who has donated so far. If you would like to contribute, please visit https://edinburghkiltwalk2019.everydayhero.com/uk/ged.

Scott Cunningham MBE, Fundraising Officer for The Haven, said:

We are delighted to have our local MP on board Team Haven for this year’s Edinburgh Kiltwalk.

Ged has been a fantastic supporter since being elected, attending many events over the past few years. It was great to catch up with Ged and his office manager Lynsey Hamilton when they visited the centre and hear about their training plan before they tackle the 24-mile Mighty Stride on September 15.

On behalf of everyone here at The Haven, I would like to say a massive thanks to Ged and the team for his continued support and wish them all the best for this challenge in Edinburgh.

We would also welcome anyone else who is interested in joining or supporting Team Haven, for more information please call 01698 727505 or visit www.thehavencentre.com.
