Monica Lennon is bidding to become the next leader of Scottish Labour

The leadership campaign was triggered when former leader Richard Leonard resigned unexpectedly on the 14th of January forcing a competition that will see a new leader declared on Saturday the 27th of February.

Monica announced her candidacy on Twitter, just hours before the midnight deadline on the 17th of January, saying:

Following discussions with party members, I have decided to put my name forward to lead the Scottish Labour Party.

Our members deserve to have their say about the best way to take forward our vision for a fairer and more equal Scotland. I look forward to being considered.

Anas Sarwar, MSP for the Glasgow region, had previously announced his intention to stand in what is now a straight competition between Monica and Anas.

We can’t do this without you – this is a people powered campaign and I want members and those who share our values and aspirations for radical social and economic change to be fully involved.

At the meeting of her local CLP Monica received 97% of the vote and has also gained the support of trade unions Unite, Unison, CWU and TSSA as well as other affiliated organisations Socialist Health Association, Christians on the Left and the Socialist Educational Association Scotland.

Writing on social media Monica made an appeal for grassroots members to support her and donate what they could to a Crowdfunding campaign.

I’m standing to be the next Scottish Labour Leader. I’m part of a new generation of leadership with a clear vision for a fairer Scotland.

We can’t do this without you – this is a people powered campaign and I want members and those who share our values and aspirations for radical social and economic change to be fully involved.

If you can spare your time to help us that would be great, and if you can spare a few pounds to help us get our message out that will make all the difference.

I’m grateful to everyone for every contribution and I will not forget that this has been, from the word go, a campaign run by and for grassroots Labour members.

You can sign up to help Monica’s campaign at www.monicaforleader.org and follow the campaign on Facebook and Twitter for updates.

The ballot of Scottish Labour members will open on Tuesday 9th of February and close on Friday 26th of February with the result announced the following day.
