Thousands of Asda employees across the country are being forced by the supermarket giant to sign changes to their contracts which will see them lose out on flexibility and holidays.

The GMB Union says staff have been threatened with losing their jobs if they refuse to sign the new deal, known as Contract 6.

In a recent consultative ballot by the union, 93 per cent of respondents said they did not agree with the contract changes being forced upon them.

Many cited issues with childcare, caring roles, studying, family and other outside of work commitments.

Ged Killen, Labour MP for Rutherglen and Hamilton West, said:

It is extremely concerning that such a large employer in Rutherglen and Hamilton West is forcing these new contracts onto the staff, leaving them with no choice but to accept the changes or risk losing their jobs.

I’m sure Asda customers in Blantyre, Hamilton and Toryglen would be horrified to know how it is treating its employees.

Many local workers with caring commitments, issues with childcare and family responsibilities are going to be severely hit by any loss in flexibility.

I understand some improvements to the original contract proposed have been won by GMB members, but I’ll be calling on Asda to work constructively with the union, its members and workers to seek a better deal and secure a decent future for Asda workers in Blantyre, Hamilton and Toryglen.

The GMB is staging a mass protest of Asda workers from across the country in Leeds, where Asda is headquartered, on August 14, 2019.
