Monica Lennon named New MSP of the Year

Monica Lennon, Central Scotland MSP and member of Hamilton, Larkhall & Stonehouse Labour Party, has been named New MSP of the Year at the prestigious Holyrood Political Awards.

In June 2018 Holyrood magazine launched the ‘Holyrood Political Garden Party & Awards’ to “celebrate the brilliant and the bizarre from the past political year” and local members were delighted to see our very own Monica Lennon win New MSP of the Year, gaining recognition for the contribution she has made to the parliament since being elected in 2016.

She has made what were taboo subjects very mainstream and done it in a self-deprecating and inclusive fashion.

In their summation the judges had this to say about Monica:

Monica has made a real impression on the parliament with very powerful and emotional speeches on a range of topics including her experience of growing up with an alcoholic father, to the fact that she was sexually assaulted by a member of her own party and onto her private member’s bill to end period poverty which would make Scotland the first country to do so.

She has made what were taboo subjects very mainstream and done it in a self-deprecating and inclusive fashion.

The award for Monica comes after she won the Herald newspaper’s One to Watch award last year.

Holyrood is a fortnightly magazine that focuses on Scottish politics and won awards for its coverage of the Scottish independence referendum and again in 2016 for its ongoing #Holyroodbaby campaign.
