Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn brought his message of “for the many, not the few” to Lanarkshire yesterday.
As part of his tour of Scottish constituencies Jeremy took to the streets of Coatbridge with local Labour MP Hugh Gaffney in support of the campaign to stop the closure of the DWP office in Coatbridge.
Speaking to hundreds of campaigners outside the Quadrant shopping centre Jeremy called on the government to save the Coatbridge office and halt its closure programme.
“I’m saying to the government: halt this closure programme, halt the closure of this centre here, don’t destroy the 600 jobs that are available here that are important as an economic contributor to this town.”
Local MP, Ged Killen, also accompanied Jeremy on a visit to Liberty Steel in Cambuslang to discuss their future plans.
After the visit Jeremy said:
“The steel industry is vital to the manufacturing base of our economy, that does require stability, investment and a market.”
Jeremy also met voters in Motherwell town centre before rounding off the day with a rousing speech at the annual Keir Hardie Society dinner where he vowed to continue the struggle for social justice that Keir Hardie, a working-class Scot, began when he founded the Labour Party and became its first member of parliament at the beginning of the last century.
